Hospital Beds for San Francisco Homes

For flats, stoops, steep streets and small bedrooms

San Francisco, California, from the Sunset and the Richmond to the Mission, Noe Valley and the Excelsior.

Straight talk about distance

Our showroom and factory are in Burbank, about 380 miles south. Before you order, call us and we will tell you honestly what delivery or shipping to your San Francisco address involves.

San Francisco homes ask a lot of a hospital bed: stoop stairs, narrow Victorian halls, small bedrooms and cool, foggy nights. Each of our six hi-low beds below is written as a postcard to a San Francisco household, with the problem, why it matters and how the bed solves it.

Six Postcards to San Francisco

The picture on one side, the message on the other, and the one fact that matters most on the stamp.

Tuffcare Century

Long Term Care Bed T7036 and T7042

To the family staying put in a rent-controlled flat.

Your father has lived in the same Richmond District flat for forty years, and moving is not an option. Now he needs a real hospital bed, and his bedroom is barely big enough for the one he has.

Every bed you look at seems too wide, and without one, you and the visiting aide lift and turn him by hand in a room with no space to work.

The Tuffcare T7036 is just 36 inches wide, a hospital-grade bed for a small San Francisco bedroom. Its two-piece split frame comes apart for narrow stairs, its five-function pendant controls height, head, foot, Trendelenburg and reverse, and eight locking casters let you roll it out from the wall for care, then tuck it back.

  • T7036: 36 x 80 in., to 600 lb.
  • T7042: 42 x 80 in.
  • Backup battery, up to 7 min.

Supernal 3 Hi-Low

To the studio dweller who has outgrown the loft bed.

In a small studio, the loft bed made perfect sense: sleep up top, live underneath. But after a knee injury, climbing that ladder at midnight has become genuinely dangerous.

You have started sleeping on the couch, sore and short on sleep, because the bed you own is the riskiest thing in the apartment.

Bring the bed down to earth. The Supernal 3 is a full bed that rises when you want to stand and lowers to about 10.5 inches at the frame, with head and foot motion for reading and resting. Its wall-hugging design keeps it close to the wall in a small room, and its upholstered frame looks like ordinary furniture. An optional support rail travels with the bed.

Supernal 5 Adjustable Bed System

To the family for whom every movement hurts.

Cancer has spread to your wife's bones, and any sudden change of position is painful. Her care team wants her shifted often, gently and in small steps.

Every time you and her sister move her by hand, it hurts her, and it hurts you to watch. So she gets moved less often than she should.

The Supernal 5's motors make each change slow and smooth. Raise or lower the head and foot a little at a time, tilt the whole bed with Trendelenburg or reverse Trendelenburg without lifting her, and set the height so caregivers can reach her comfortably. Follow her care team's positioning plan, and ask them about pain control before repositioning.

Flexabed

Flexabed Hi-Low SL

To the couple who never agree on the temperature.

The fog rolls in and your Edwardian flat goes cold. She wants a heated pad and a heavy duvet; he runs hot and kicks everything off by midnight. And his arthritis means he needs his knees raised to sleep.

One shared mattress means one temperature and one position, so one of you is always cold, hot or sore.

A split Flexabed Hi-Low SL gives each of you your own mattress, so each side can be made up the way you like it, heated pad on hers, light blanket on his, and each side raises its own head and knees. The vertical lift raises the whole bed so standing is easier, and every bed is hand-built to order in Georgia.

Dawn House Living

The Dawn House Bed

To the friend who cannot hear the alarm.

You are Deaf, and your hearing-impaired partner sleeps soundly too. Vibrating alarms under the pillow slip away in the night, and flashing lights do nothing once you roll toward the wall.

You miss early appointments, or sleep so lightly worrying about them that you are worn out before the day begins.

The Dawn House's Rise to Wake raises you gently at the time you set, a wake-up you feel rather than hear. Motion-activated underbed lighting shows the way when your feet touch the floor, hi-low height makes standing steady, and passive sensors keep a record of your heart rate, breathing and sleep, with nothing to wear. Control it all from the app or remote.

Ergomotion

Ascend High-Low Adjustable Bed with Tilt

To the walker whose back gives out on the hills.

Spinal stenosis makes your legs ache and your back burn when you stand straight, and the only relief is bending forward. Lying flat at night does the same as standing tall.

You curl up on your side in a knot, wake stiff, and dread the walk up your own street the next morning.

The Ascend's zero-gravity position raises your knees and head together, easing the curve of the lower back the way bending forward does. Save it on a preset so it is waiting every night, tilt the whole bed up to 7 degrees if you like, and use about 7 inches of hi-low lift and the optional support rail to stand. Ask your doctor which positions help you most.

  • Height about 17.9 to 25.4 in.
  • Twin XL, Full, Queen, Split King

Flats, Stoops and Narrow Halls

Many San Francisco homes sit above the garage, up a stoop, behind a narrow Victorian hallway. Measure these before you choose a bed.

Measure the route, not just the room

A hospital bed that fits the bedroom is no use if it cannot reach it. In a typical San Francisco flat, the hardest points are the stoop, the turn at the top of an interior staircase and doorways framed a century ago.

Write down these six measurements and call 800-233-7382. We will tell you which beds can make the trip, and whether a split frame or a slimmer mattress would help.

  1. The stoopNumber of steps and the width between the railings.
  2. The tightest turnAny landing or bend on the interior staircase.
  3. DoorwaysFront door, hall doors and the bedroom door, at their narrowest.
  4. The hallwayIts narrowest width, including radiators or built-ins.
  5. The bedroomLength and width, with room left on one side for care.
  6. PowerA grounded outlet near the head of the bed, not an old two-prong one.

Latexpedic Natural Latex Mattresses

Handmade one at a time in our Burbank factory and sold factory direct, with handles made for San Francisco stairs.

Latexpedic 7-inch low-profile natural latex mattress, the lightest model
The 7-inch Latexpedic: our lightest and most flexible profile.

When the mattress has to climb thirty stairs

Up the stoop, around the landing, down a narrow hall: a heavy, stiff mattress with no handles turns delivery into a wrestling match, and a mattress that will not bend may not make the turn at all.

Every Latexpedic has sturdy handles on its sides, so two people can carry it with a proper grip. Natural latex is flexible enough to bow gently around a tight landing, and the 7-inch profile is our lightest. Once it is in, it is fully reversible and quilted on both sides, so you can flip it rather than replace it, and it carries a 20-year limited warranty.

  • Factory directMade, sold and guaranteed by Electropedic, with no middleman.
  • Handmade, one at a timeEach mattress built individually by hand in Burbank.
  • Fully reversibleLatex from top to bottom, so it can be flipped.
  • Quilted on both sidesCotton and wool on each face.
  • Handles and a zipperCarry it up the stairs; change the firmness later.
  • 20-year limited warrantyFrom a family in the bed business since 1964.

For San Francisco Customers

How we help San Francisco families from Burbank, and the questions they ask first.

From the Sunset to the Excelsior

San Francisco homes range from Sunset and Richmond District houses above the garage to Victorian and Edwardian flats in Noe Valley, the Mission and Pacific Heights, and small apartments with steep walk-ups. Most of the advice on this page, measuring the route, choosing a narrower bed, carrying a lighter mattress, comes from what makes these homes different.

Planning around a hospital stay

Families often start looking during a stay at UCSF Medical Center, Zuckerberg San Francisco General, California Pacific Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente San Francisco or the San Francisco VA. Because we are far away, call as early as possible so we can tell you honestly what is possible and how long it will take.

Honest answers by phone

Before you order anything, we will talk through the person, the room, the stairs and your timeline, and let you know whether delivery or shipping to your address is practical.
